Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has been rumored to be the Dallas Cowboys' backup quarterback.

According to The Inquisitr, either Griffin or Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel could be part of the Cowboys as a backup to Tony Romo. As suggested by the publication, the latter has the smaller chance, since he needs to resolve some issues off the field. The Browns quarterback is reportedly going to take some time off the field to fix these issues. This bumps Griffin up to be the top candidate as Romo's backup quarterback.

Griffin has been linked to Cowboys and though he had been declining since his breakout season in 2012, the former Redskins quarterback is viewed highly by Cowboy's owner Jerry Jones. Along with several injuries he had three years ago, Griffin also had to cope with their coach, who reportedly has never liked him.

Jones praised Griffin during his rookie season in 2012, a time when the Redskins quarterback led his team to a 38-31 victory, throwing four first-half touchdowns and finishing with 304 passing yards.

In his interview with Sports Day, Jones said that he had been in awe of RGIII and the plays he had been making. He also mentioned that he was a fan of RGIII, that the player had got it, and he was a driven young man.

The Cowboys reportedly needed a backup, since quarterbacks Kellen Moore, Matt Cassel, and Brandon Weeden went 1-11 in 2015 while they were starting in place of Romo.

In 2015, Griffin was benched for Kirk Cousins, who pushed to set a record this season and lead Washington to the playoffs. Cousins is set to be an unrestricted free agent and is assumed to cash in during the offseason and sign again with the Redskins. It is expected that the Redskins could cut Griffin anytime, with March at the earliest possible time.

One of Griffins' issues in Redskins was his tendency to take sacks, along with the injuries that affected his rookie form.

According to NFL Trade Rumors, Matt Miller compared North Dakota State's Carson Wentz to Oakland Raiders quarterback Cerek Carr, Memphis Tigers quarterback Paxton Lynch to the Jacksonville Jaguars Blake Bortles, and California Golden Bears quarterback Jared Goff to Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.

With regard to the free agents, Over the Capfounder's Jason Fitzgerald does not view Bengals wide receiver Marvin Jones getting more than $7 million per season through free agency. He added that linebacker Bruce Irvin was a "mid $6M" level player, which means he could have a command a contract of around $6 million per year.

The Dallas Cowboy roster includes quarterback Tony Romo, Matt Cassel, and Kellen Moore, wide receivers Brice Butler, Dez Bryant, Terrence Williams, Lucky Whitehead, and Cole Beasley, defensive end Greg Hardy, running back Darren McFadden and Robert Turbin, tight end Jason Witten, linebackers Rolando McClain and Sean Lee, placekicker Dan Bailey, safety Jeff Heath, defensive end Randy Gregory and Jack Crawford, cornerback Orlando Scandrick and Byron Jones, and tackle La'el Collins, among others.
